Every house, skyscraper and glass building, every bridge, airport and

Every house, skyscraper and glass building, every bridge, airport and sidewalk in our modern society depends on sand. We use it to manufacture optical fiber, cell phone components and computer chips. We find it in our toothpaste, powdered foods and even in our glass of wine (both the glass and the wine, as a fining agent)!

However, is sand an infinite resource? Can the existing supply satisfy a gigantic demand fueled by construction booms? What are the consequences of intensive beach sand mining for the environment and the neighboring populations? Will one day those grains of silica surrounding our daily lives become used up?

Based on encounters with sand smugglers, barefoot millionaires, corrupt politicians, unscrupulous real estate developers and environmentalists, this investigation takes us around the globe to unveil a new gold rush and a disturbing fact: the “SAND WARS” have begun.

Green Sense has invited Mr. Dickson Wong, a biology teacher

Green Sense has invited Mr. Dickson Wong, a biology teacher at Ho Koon Nature Education Cum Astronomical Centre, as the speaker of the talk.

Mr. Wong obtained his M. Phil. in Environmental Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is now a biology teacher at Ho Koon Nature Education Cum Astronomical Centre. A veteran in nature education with extensive experience, Mr. Wong brings his students into Nature and guides them to study first-hand the wild life of Hong Kong as well as issues in urban development and environmental conservation.

Mr. Wong is no stranger to Hong Kong’s biodiversity, having fallen in love with bird-watching a little more than ten years ago and now extended his interest of study to dazzlingly-variated insects, often-unnoticed spiders, and even aquatic life. In 2006, he published “A Guide to the Spiders of Hong Kong”, the first field guide for spiders of the city, which include a total of 222 species in 30 families. Mr. Wong is also a well-known conservation blogger, who frequently publishes articles online to stand up for Hong Kong’s natural environment.

In this talk, Mr. Wong will guide us in a journey through time and space, showing us the changes of Nature with the seasons and various landscapes of Hong Kong. We start from mudflats, mangrove forests and coral communities, then travel up along streams through woodlands and bushlands, and finally reach the hilltops. At the same time, through different angles, we study also Hong Kong’s precious birds, charming reptiles and amphibians, highly variegated insects, sturdy corals, fascinating spiders, and the tardigrade or ‘water bear’ – a microscopic yet near indestructible aquatic organism.

On 5th August, Green Sense successfully held the ‘Monthly Green’

On 5th August, Green Sense successfully held the ‘Monthly Green’ Green Building Guided Tour, in which we visited the Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) to know more about climate change and the ‘smart city’ concept, followed by a tour to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) Headquarters to learn about features of a green building.

The tour started from the ZCB. With detailed explanations from the staff, we were able to identify the serious consequences of climate change – a rise in temperature and extreme weather conditions becoming more common. As an international metropolis, Hong Kong has developed her own building strategies and green technologies to combat environmental problems. Some of them were introduced in situ to reduce electricity and resources consumption of buildings: Smart-plug systems to monitor household and building electricity use, variable air volume system installed on the floor for cooling, and virtual reality softwares to replace conventional building design procedures. We also had a chance to test out several locally developed technologies.

Our next stop was the EMSD Headquarters building, which showcases various features of a green building. These include, apart from greening of the façade, solar panels, sunpipes and motion sensing lights that replace conventional lighting, double-layered glass windows for heat insulation, district cooling systems which use sea water as a coolant to replace traditional air conditioning, etc. The Headquarters, without a doubt, serve as an example and encouragement to transform Hong Kong into a low-carbon city.

Climate change is a pressing menace that simply cannot be neglected. Hong Kong, however, has yet to embrace environmental-friendly measures, and is thus to blame for contributing hugely to carbon emissions and aggravating global warming. As a response, the government has launched Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2030+, which states that the ultimate goal is to reduce emission for 65% to 70% relative to 2005 levels by 2030. To achieve the target, the city will need efforts from the authorities to implement green energy policies and better town planning, efforts from various sectors to incorporate green concepts in building designs, most importantly, efforts from the public to keep up a more low-carbon, energy-efficient lifestyle.

Global warming is an urgent problem that the whole world

Global warming is an urgent problem that the whole world is concerned. Saving energy and lowering carbon emission is always the top mission for every country. Green Sense will carry out a tour to Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) Headquarters Building for the “Monthly Green” in August to take a look of green building examples in Hong Kong.

ZCB is a 3-storey building which comprises of an exhibition areas, an eco-home show flat, an office area and a multi-function hall. There is also a landscape area with first native urban woodland which has around 40 kinds of native trees.

As the first zero carbon building in Hong Kong, ZCB consists of over 80 different eco-building technologies that help reduce in 45% of energy demand compare to other buildings in current standard design. Moreover, photovoltaic panels and biofuel are used in ZCB to provide electricity not only for their own needs but also for the local grid. These features highlight the ZCB a unique site of Hong Kong Green Buildings.

The EMSD Headquarters Buildings is originally the former Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminal 2 building. It was revitalized and adaptive reused in 2005. The revitalization conception with less demolition and construction waste makes it an ideal example of green buildings.

No matter the ZCB or the EMSC Headquarters Buildings, they both play an important role in building a green Kowloon East. By the end of this “Monthly Green” activity, participants will have a better understanding in how different building design can help with alleviating the global warming. Nevertheless, the wiser use of energy saving design and products are also vital.

“Monthly Green: Night at Lung Fu Shan” was held successfully

“Monthly Green: Night at Lung Fu Shan” was held successfully last Saturday (10 June) under the lead of tour guide Michael. Victoria Peak is one of the popular tourist attractions in Hong Kong, while at the same time, is also the homes of a considerable amount of amphibians and reptiles. Besides from appreciating the splendid night view of Victoria Habour, participants have explored the other side of the peak -the natural environment.

The tour started at the Peak Galleria, we witnessed the problem of light pollution. After that, we walked along Harlech Road to Lung Fu Shan Country Park. Frogs, spiders, centipedes and other nocturnal animals were seen from time to time. We gained an insight on the characteristics of different amphibians, reptiles, various animals and plants.

Hong Kong is well known of its high density of skyscrapers, and is called “concrete jungle”. Yet, there are many natural creatures living right beside us, and all we have to do is to look around carefully. Green Sense hope that participants could understand the relationship of human and nature through this ecotour, as well as ponder on the balance and trade-off between urban development and natural environment.

There are about 40% of land area designated as country parks and special areas, which nurtured a vast diversity of flora and fauna. To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Country Parks, all are welcome to join the celebration programmes, visiting by oneself is also not difficult.

Hiking Scheme (Leisure and Cultural Services Department): http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/en/healthy/hiking/index.html

Green Sense “Monthly Green in May: Lok Ma Chau Loop

Green Sense “Monthly Green in May: Lok Ma Chau Loop – Exploring the Edge” was held successfully on last Saturday(6th May), even the weather had been inconsistent. The aim of this guided tour was to deeper participants understanding on the impact of “Joint Task Force on the Development of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park in the Loop” [1] to the Lok Ma Chau Loop. The journey was led by Mr. Tam Hoi-Pong, Roy, chief executive (voluntary) of Green Sense.

We first arrived at Lok Ma Chau Garden and had a glance of the Loop. Following the border line towards the east, the tour was finished at Ho Sheung Heung. At the end of the border where the old Shenzhen River was just in front us, we were amazed by its peacefulness. Throughout the journey, Roy introduced different animal and plant species with their distinct characteristics. After this guided tour, we could have a better grasp of the current situation of Lok Ma Chau Loop and the potential changes after the development.

The Planning Department aims to develop the Loop for higher education complemented by high-tech research. Yet, the necessity is controversial. The government claimed that the development will not bring in unacceptable environmental harm on the Loop, where reedbed habitat will be set up as a mitigation. Yet, the sufficiency of such mitigation area is a matter to concern. Moreover, the development might also disturb the flying pathway of birds or the crossing path of small mammals. The usefulness of the remedy plan for government is sceptical.

As the Loop is at the heart of the border, once if we loss this buffer zone, the problems of urbanization bring along will directly affect the nearby countryside. HKSAR Government keeps emphasizing the cooperation between HK and Shenzhen should be enhanced for our mutual benefit. But such development plan is not only damaging our natural habitat but also lead to a concern about the entry and exit of Chinese citizen and the foreigners through the border. The Government should response properly to these questions before they take any further action.
